Ack, I've fallen behind.

I owe a whole bunch of people comments and responses, but Mini DW has (seemingly overnight) learned to crawl and is standing up and she's suddenly very mobile and utterly fearless and it is terrifying.

Explosions have been going off since about 9:30 AM. Hell, who am I kidding. They've been going off since last month. The dog is managing better than she has in past years, so far. Keeping my fingers crossed that she stays this calm once the sun goes down.

The plan for tonight is cheesy action movies with the volume cranked up well past acceptable levels. Last year we watched Broken Arrow and Face/Off, which is going to be a hard combo to beat this time around.

I'm dying to write, but it's much too distracting. There's no rushing this chapter, no matter how excited I am to post it. So I think I'm going to set the laptop aside and enjoy some burgers and hot dogs instead.

A lot of it looks pretty accurate. #1 is absolutely MY JAM and probably my most favorite trope of all time.

Once you get down towards the bottom, the results are a little more questionable. I actually really enjoy the occasional vampire/werewolf or supernatural romance fic, and while I'm not a big fan of A/B/O universes I'm far more likely to read that than "actually unrequited pining," which I won't touch with a ten foot pole.

Are Pride & Prejudice AUs a big thing? I've never actually read the novel, so I think the appeal is a bit lost on me.

Just want to take a moment to point anyone new to Dreamwidth in the direction of the wonderful 221b_recs community! All Holmes adaptations and all ships are welcome. Members sign up on a monthly basis to make recs. It's a great way to find fics (and art and vids!) that may have flown under your radar (as well as share the love for works you think deserve more attention.)

It would be great to see the community get a little more traffic. It's been pretty quiet over there lately.

If you've come here from Tumblr, hi!

I've had an account on Dreamwidth for a little over a year now, though I'm not a very active poster. Up until this point, the majority of my fannish activities have consisted of reblogging pretty pictures and gifsets over on Tumblr and posting fic to AO3. Seems like change is inevitable, though, so I'm happy to start using this space a little more.

I'm subscribing back to anyone who subscribes to me right now. My blog is public, and any and all fandom posts that I make should be visible to all. I have a few private/personal/non-fandom posts that are locked, so until I figure out filters please don't be offended if I don't also grant access to my journal. You're not missing much, I promise!

deleted fics make me sad

Aw, damn. There was a WIP fic that I'd been following for the last few years (the kind of fic that was SO GOOD that you'd happily wait as many years as necessary to get the next chapter and even if the next chapter never came would still be absurdly happy to have read what was already there), and every once in a while I'd think about it and pop back in to see if there were any updates or notes. As far as I know, the author never had any Tumblr or fandom presence, and this was their only work.

In any case, I was thinking about it today, and went to go check in and... it's gone. Deleted.

It's probably a very slim chance, but any possibility anyone here was also obsessively reading We Are All Each Other's Consequences by NyxUnderwood, and had the excellent foresight to save a copy?

I have too many WIPs.

I'm focusing on powering through "The Dead Detective" right now, because I have it outlined and I'm fairly sure I can write and post it quickly as long as I keep up my momentum.

Said momentum, of course, depends on not getting distracted by very pretty songs that make me feel lots of feels and bring on the urge to work on my backburner fake relationship Jealous!John story that I most definitely do not have time to work on right now.

This was my last live-aired XF episode. I will probably watch the finale at some point, but after it's aired and I've spoiled myself enough to feel sufficiently numbed.

Tonight's XF episode was a standalone that felt like it strolled right out of the 90s. I believe I saw a post going around on Tumblr that likened it to a mix between "Chinga" and "Die Hand Die Verletzt," which seems an accurate description. Lots of small town relationship drama spilling over into witchcraft and murder.

This episode has also introduced the world to Mr. Chuckleteeth, who I think will be featuring in a lot of folks' nightmares for quite some time.

I don't know exactly what that was, but it wasn't an episode of the X-Files. That's not to say I disliked it-- it was actually one of the most visually creative and entertaining hours of television I've seen in a while. But it didn't seem to exist in anything at all resembling the universe that the rest of the show occupies.

On "Kitten"

I wasn't able to watch this one live, but I finally had a chance to sit down and catch up last night. All in all, I thought it was solid (if sort of unremarkable.) It felt a LOT like watching an older episode of the show, more so than anything else this season.

Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe this to be only the third(?) XF episode in history to be directed by a woman. So it had that going for it, too. (I'm unfamiliar with Carol Banker's other directorial work, but I thought she did a fine job capturing that delightful shrouded-in-fog mystery that's such a staple of the older MOTW episodes.)

Season 11 of the X-Files is better than Season 10. By a large margin. Mulder and Scully are Mulder and Scully again, mostly, and the show does best (as it always has) when the pair of them are allowed to share the screen.

Whining about writing

So a kinkmeme prompt caught my eye, and now I'm well into working on and outlining a new fic. It's a casefic, where grooms are being murdered at weddings, and Sherlock asks Janine to assist him by staging a full-on courtship and fake wedding as a sting operation, much to John's consternation.

I'm having a ton of fun plotting it out, and using every available opportunity to make John jealous af. But I keep running into the same problem that I always do when I try to write casefics, which is that I HATE NAMING CHARACTERS.

I hate it. I really hate it. And because this fic has a list of victims (and victims' unfortunate spouses, and various suspects, etc. etc. etc.) there are, by necessity, going to be a whole bunch of names I have to make up. If I were adapting an ACD case, I'd borrow some names from canon, but it doesn't really fit here.

How in the world does one come up with all of these names? Do I just... spin a wheel and match first names to last? It's a silly thing to be driving me nuts, but it's driving me nuts.

It's my first time participating in Holmestice. I'm so excited to be a part of it this year-- it always looks like a great deal of fun.

In any case, one of the stipulations is that the completed work has to go through some sort of beta process. I've had some things proofread in the distant past, but have never really worked with a beta before. I tend to be reclusive and slow to make fannish connections (I'm trying very hard to be better about this!), so much of this process is a mystery to me.

I guess I'm sort of at a loss as to what to do? What to expect? Where to find one?

(I mean, worst case scenario, my hubs can proofread it for grammar and spelling errors. It would be something of a labor of love for him, hehe, as while he does occasionally check AO3 to make enthusiastic noises over the kudos count on NTYBTTS, he generally has zero interest in Sherlock fanfiction.)

Can anyone suggest anything to me? Point me in the right direction? Tell me I'm making mountains out of molehills? :)

Heh. So this morning, I started to make a post about all of the things I planned to get done today, like getting back to a whole bunch of fics I wanted to leave comments on and finishing up the most recent chapter of Crime Writer.

As always seems to be the case with weekends, time got away from me. Ugh. So not only did I not finish making my post, I never finished half the things I was posting about intending to do.

At least I finished the Crime Writer update. I keep trying to keep this fic short and fun, like the very silly TV show it's based on, and it keeps wanting to grow. So instead of having an entire case introduced and wrapped up in this chapter like I'd originally intended, there will be some spillover into the next.

I have a list a mile long of fics I need to leave comments on. I've been terrible about it. I keep reading things, going "oh, wow, I need to leave a nice long comment here" and then never having enough time to come back to do it. I'm trying to get better at leaving quick little "I really liked this" comments on things, so that if I never make it back I at least said something.

Welp, bit the bullet and deleted my Livejournal account. I mostly used it for communities and fic writing challenges anyway, so I'm hoping that some of those communities will spring up here (if they haven't already.) It'd be a shame to lose that-- Tumblr is great for reblogging pretty pictures, but it really makes communication and conversation difficult.
